One advantage to a long life is you can see recognize trends and pretty much know what is going to happen. All the signs are there. We are going through the “massive resistance” phase right now but … The Washington Redskins will change their name.
I doubt it will be soon. I suspect it will be with grudging reluctance. But the team just cannot fly in the face of every trend in the last half century and maintain a name that is offensive to a whole race of people. It will fall.
Why the resistance? Change: No on likes it. Jarring, cataclysmic, devastating change. Tradition will be shredded. The team won’t look the same. There will have to be new colors for the uniforms. The band won’t sound the same. “Hail to the Redskins” will disappear.
Nonsense. There is no need to change that much
Just alter the name to the Washington Warriors. The dignified “brave” that has been the symbol of the team can remain. The colors can remain. And the song can still be sung … “Hail to the Warriors”. It works perfectly.
Why wait twenty years to hear, “Washington’s Warriors trounced their arch rivals, the Dallas Cowboys in a barn burner of a game yesterday.” Do it next year and no one will think anything of it in a couple of years. That’s better than being dragooned into it, eventually, reluctantly and unnecessarily.
